What is "Restorative Justice"? And Why Don't Illinois Offenders Get it?

How would cities make the transition to restorative criminal justice systems? This article outlines the processes some U.S. cities are undertaking to transform their criminal justice systems. In Illinois, the prisoner population increased 500% over the last 37 years, with half of released prisoners coming back. Today, the state of Illinois is considering the right to restorative justice. Additionally, the state is considering reforming criminal sentencing by rewriting its criminal code with the CLEAR intiative (Criminal Law Edit, Align, and Reform). In sum, Illinois is starting to operate the criminal justice system in a way that recognizes the state's moral and legal obligation to restore offenders to useful citizenship in the community.
