The Importance of Public Post-Secondary Education
From: Canadian Centre for Policy Alternatives
Why shouldn't we invest more in education and offer solutions to provide access to all students? Is it even possible? Seth Klein thinks it is. He argues that education is an investment that benefits the individual as well as society as a whole and that greater investment will reap greater rewards for everybody. Klein believes that we should focus on these investments by increasing space and financial resources to students, particularly low-income students. How? By keeping tuitions low for starters! Klein supports this by arguing that some low-income students may enter into fields with high social value but relatively little market value. To him, we need these types of students to do good work without the cloud of debt hanging over their heads. And, as Klein argues, those working in fields with high social value improve the lives of everybody. So isn't it time to rethink education to include everybody, not just those that can afford it? In this speech, Klein highlights an alternative budget plan on behalf of the Canadian Centre for Policy Alternatives that makes education accessible to all.
