Ever felt that you were just a number in the large factory-like atmosphere of your school? What if you received an education in a smaller school? The research in this report suggests that your sense of belonging, school safety, and even teacher morale improve in smaller schools. Existing research already points to the benefits of smaller schools over larger ones - they bind communities and serve as hubs for civic and social engagement, they emphasize interpersonal relationships in learning, and they are inclusive of a children across a spectrum of learning styles. Yet larger schools are proliferating in the hopes of saving more money. The authors make a strong case for small schools and argue that consolidating smaller schools into larger ones and simply closing other smalls school is a waste of resources. The alternative is to divert money going into larger schools to strengthening smaller schools and seeking financial assistance from state and federal governments.
