Recreating Schools for All Children
From: New Horizons for Learning
Our society is changing, so naturally our systems must change, right? Author John Morefield agrees. In this article, Morefield challenges the conventional, individualistic, and competitive system of education in place today and offers an alternative that emphasizes cooperation and relationships. Moreover, he states that children of color and low-income children have been traditionally ignored by the educational system. He argues that we must think, in particular about these children and how education may work for them too, not just the class and color-privileged. In his opinion, transforming our educational system will require a values-based paradigm shift, one that emphasizes community rather than individualism. In this article, Morefield explores this shift in values in the different aspects of education. Together, with hard work and a re-focus on the value of education for all children, we can transform education.
