Ownership Matters
From: Institute for Local Self-Reliance
Wouldn't your community rather have more control of the internet than someone outside of the community sitting behind a desk in a corporate office building? This article explores the concept of community ownership of information systems. The author offers a view of affordable and readily accessible wireless information networks that are owned by the public and not by private interests. She argues that establishing a public infrastructure is more beneficial to communities than reliance on corporate goodwill for internet access. The author closes with a view of real, tangible community ownership of the internet in the future.
