How was education viewed in the past and how does it compare to how we view it today? John Dewey wrote a visionary statement on his philosophy of education in 1897. Dewey begins by defining education and its role of engaging students' with a larger, inclusive society. He defines the school as a social institution and says that subject matter and method of instruction should be determined organically by students' interests. He concludes by speaking of the integral role of education in social progress and reform. How does Dewey's vision reflect or conflict with our current system of education?
