How can individuals participate in spending decisions within their community? Many communities are adopting Participatory Budgeting in order to elevate and amplify the voice of the community in the public spending of government money. The process of Participatory Budgeting is broken into 6 steps: Community members identify spending priorities; representative delegates are elected; delegates transform community priorities into specific projects; public employees provide technical assistance; the community votes on which projects to spend money; the municipality implements the project. This type of Budgeting has increased public participation in politics and has improved communities worldwide. The article offers an analysis, critique, and vision for this type of Budgeting in local and state communities.
