You ever heard the saying, "Whoever makes the media, makes the rules?" In this speech, Malkia Cyril argues that the media system of today reproduces and maintains the colonial power relationships of America's beginnings. In other words, today's media creates and perpetuates structural racism and class oppression. Cyril debunks our myths of the origins of media and calls for radical changes to subvert the current media system. How? We can adopt a movement-based, racial, economic, and gendered lens to media today; we can connect these movements to media policy; and we can fight for access and accountability from media, organe for power, and strategically use our political power. By doing these things, we can effectively reform media.
