Let's admit it, we're reluctant to vote for third party candidates because of the possible spoiler effect - that our vote would take away from the candidate that has a better chance. Is this mentality wrong? How can we elevate third party candidates above a potential spoiler effect? In this article, New Rules describes an alternative called Instant Runoff Voting. In this system, candidates are ranked on the ballot and voters don't have to compromise their vote by placing their vote solely on one candidate.
