Captive Kids: A Report on Commercial Pressures On Kids At School
From: Consumers Union
Remember those soda vendors and snack machines in your school growing up? Ever think about how this was affecting your education? In this report, The Consumers Union argues that commercialism in United States elementary and secondary schools poses a significant and growing threat to the integrity of education in America. The Union argues that educational materials and resources are biased, self-serving, and promotional and ultimately turn students into an audience for commerical messages. Commercialism in schools is common because of the focus on youth-centered marketing, the burgeoning influence of commercialism in all society, and above all, school budgetary problems. This report examines the consequences of commercialism in schools and offers recommendations for schools to forego commericalism and business interests.
