Breaking Free with Fair Elections: A New Declaration of Independence for Congress

No strings attached. Ever heard of that phrase? Many of you probably would agree that it doesn't exist, particularly when it comes to money and politics. This report argues that incessant fundraising and subsequent obligation to donors has decreased the ability of politicians to make sound public policy work that is accountable to their constituents. Fair Elections, a system of full public financing of elections, is designed to address this problem of money in politics. This alternative system has been well received and is becoming increasingly popular among political candidates. The article examines the role of money in government and explores the tenets of Fair Elections, which frees the election system of financial interests.
